Harrisburg International Airport Information

Harrisburg International Airport is the third largest airport in Pennsylvania, but is much smaller than the airports in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The site of the airport has actually been an airstrip since 1918 when it welcomed its first military aircraft. It is also frequented by Air Force One during training missions. However, the President isn’t aboard during these tests.

The airport features non-stop flights to 15 different cities on five different airlines.

The most popular destinations from Harrisburg International Airport include Philadelphia, Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Detroit.

Philadelphia is the only airport in Pennsylvania with scheduled service to and from Harrisburg.

Getting to/from Harrisburg International Airport

Harrisburg International Airport is located about 13 miles outside of downtown Harrisburg near Middletown, Pennsylvania. It is located just off of Interstates 83 and 283 as well as the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Parking is available at the airport, and several car rental companies are available to help passengers.

Taking Public Transportation to/from Harrisburg International Airport

Unfortunately, Harrisburg International Airport isn’t well served by public transit.

Route 7 of the Capital Area Transit System runs between Harrisburg International Airport and downtown Harrisburg roughly once every 90 minutes from 6am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 6pm on Saturdays. No public transit is available to the airport on Sundays.

For those looking to get to or from the airport outside of these hours, you can either take a taxi to the airport, or use a combination of train and taxi. The Middletown Amtrak Station is serviced several times a day by train and is only about 3 miles from the airport. Make sure to check what time the Keystone Train is running, however, as it stops in Middletown only a few times a day on its way to Harrisburg.

If you are coming from Philadelphia and counting on public transportation to get to downtown Harrisburg, taking the train might be a better option.
