After being closed to the public for nearly 70 years, Black-Coffey Caverns (formally Baker Caverns) in Franklin County, PA is now open again for limited tours. However, those tours don’t leave much of an opportunity for photography as you have to stay with your group.

That’s why I’m so excited to offer this photography workshop for those that want to capture great photos of this incredible underground world.

During the workshop, participants will have full access to roam the publically-accessible portions of the cave (which is located below the basement of a private home) and capture photos at their leisure over a period of three hours. Spaces to photograph include narrow corridors, large rooms, different types of cave formations, and even two underground pools of water.

What’s even better is that, unlike most caves, there is no fancy lighting here, so you’ll be able to capture a much more natural look within the space than you can at most other caves in Pennsylvania lit only by the lights you bring with you.

That being said, there is some basic infrastructure here including decades-old concrete walkways and staircases, so care will need to be taken during your visit (wear shoes with good traction). Access to the cave is via two staircases comprising roughly 40-50 total steps.

During the workshop, I will be available to assist those that are looking for help with their photography. However, for those that simply want the time to explore on their own, you are free to do so.

Because this is an underground workshop, it will go on even if there is inclement weather. However, if I must cancel the workshop due to dangerous weather conditions or other factors, I will try to reschedule it. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, you can apply your amount paid to another photo workshop or receive a full refund.

This workshop also has a minimum number of participants required for it to go on. Should that minimum not be met at least 10 days prior to the workshop, all money will be refunded.

I recommend that all participants bring the following equipment with them in addition to their camera: a sturdy tripod, a strong flashlight (not just the one on your phone as the cave is literally pitch black), shoes with good traction, a light sweatshirt or jacket, and clothes that can get dirty (spots are a bit muddy and you may get some dirt on yourself).
