Sitting atop a hill on the outskirts of Hershey, Pennsylvania, is the beautiful Hotel Hershey. The hotel was built in the early-1930s so that the region’s construction workers could have work during the early stages of the Great Depression.
Now considered a historic hotel, the four-star Hotel Hershey is one of the most upscale in Central Pennsylvania. With beautifully manicured grounds, such as the nearby Hershey Gardens, and Italian and Spanish inspired architecture, the hotel is worth visiting even if you aren’t staying there.
For those looking for a unique way to see the grounds and an overview of the area’s history, taking a Segway tour of the grounds at the Hotel Hershey can be a great choice.
I was a bit surprised when I learned that guided Segway tours were available at the hotel. After all, most Segway tours that you find are along the crowded city streets or at least in frequently touristed areas like Gettysburg. However, the Segway tour at the Hotel Hershey was unsurprisingly a fantastic way to see the grounds of the hotel.
After signing the appropriate waivers and a mandatory 30-minute training session, we were ready to go on our adventure.
Our 90-minute tour took us through the grounds of the hotel, zipping along both the roadways and the sidewalks to see various points of interest. Along the way, we stopped frequently to talk about the hotel as well as Milton Hershey and his legacy.
The highlight of the tour, however, was the opportunity to go off-roading. This was the third Segway tour that I had done, but this was my first chance to take the Segway onto a wooded path.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed my Segway tour at the Hotel Hershey and the chance to learn a bit more about the legacy of Milton Hershey. Even better, the off-roading was a lot of fun, though I did find the Segway to be a bit less responsive than a standard road model.
The Segway tour is also a great place to take your first Segway tour. Since you won’t be on any major roads, traffic is limited, which can make trying a Segway for the first time a bit less intimidating. Truthfully, riding a Segway is really quite easy.
My tour even had a few who were rather nervous to step on, and they were perfectly comfortable on the Segway within just a few minutes.
So, if you’re looking for a less intimidating way to try a Segway, want to learn more about Milton Hershey, or simply want to try a bit of off-roading, the Segway tour at the Hotel Hershey is well worth taking.
