7 State Park Campgrounds Near Philly for a Weekend with RVshare (Sponsored)

This article is sponsored by RVshare.

Camping at one of the many state parks in Pennsylvania is always a ton of fun and is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia. And, if you want to try out an RV, either for a bit more luxury or to see if a recreational vehicle is for you, consider renting an RV from RVshare.com.

RVshare was founded in 2013 and features RVs that you can rent throughout the country. At the time of publication, there are hundreds of RVs for rent near Philly including pop-up campers, small vans, and large buses. This means that no matter where you are in the state or what type of RV you are looking for, there’s a perfect option near you.

Of course, while you could grab an RV and take a road trip around the state, these are also a great choice for those looking to enjoy the outdoors with a bit more comfort while staying in one place. In fact, many of the rentals on RVshare can be delivered right to your chosen campground so you don’t even have to learn to drive them or how to set them up!

To help you pick the perfect spot to take your RV, whether you are taking a road trip or having it delivered, I’ve put together a few of the best campgrounds in PA within a three-hour drive of Philadelphia that are perfectly suited for an adventure with RVshare.

Hickory Run State Park

Explore the beauty of the Poconos in Hickory Run State Park.

Located two hours northwest of Philadelphia, Hickory Run State Park is one of my favorite parks in southeastern PA thanks to spots like Hawk Falls, the Boulder Field, and the Shades of Death Trail. There is also a lake open to swimming within the park.

There are nearly 400 camping sites in the park, more than a quarter of which offer either full hooks or just electric hookups for RVs. There are also more than 200 more sites that provide no hookups but are still open to self-sustained RVs.

That makes this one of the largest RV camping areas in a state park in eastern PA.

This park is a great base for exploring the southern Poconos region of the state.

Gifford Pinchot State Park

Gifford Pinchot State Park is a great spot to go camping in an RV.

Gifford Pinchot State Park is located in York County, a short distance south of Harrisburg and just about two hours due west of Philadelphia. The park features 18 miles of hiking trails, a great swimming area, and boat rentals.

The campground here features more than 300 camping spots, with about 40% offering some sort of hookups and nearly all of the rest open to RVs.

The park’s location makes it a great spot to explore popular spots like Harrisburg, Hershey, and York, and you can even take day trips to destinations like Gettysburg and Lancaster County.

French Creek State Park is the closest PA State Park campground to Philadelphia that has RV hookups and can be reached in just over an hour from the city. The park features 35 miles of hiking trails, a large lake for fishing and boating, and a swimming pool.

The campground here is perfect for RVs with all of the 200+ campsites available for RVs, and more than a third of the spots offering hookups for your rental.

Nearby spots like Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Daniel Boone’s Birthplace, and the city of Reading, PA, make this a great spot to explore some of the sites of eastern PA.

Ricketts Glen State Park

Hike the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen State Park.

Ricketts Glen State Park might be the best park in Pennsylvania, and it’s a perfect destination for those looking to go RVing. That’s because you can access the popular Falls Trail, the park’s two lakes, and its beach via short walking trails from the campground.

While only about 30 of the park’s camping spots have hookups for RVs, all but one of the campsites are big enough for an RV. That makes this a great park to try boondocking, especially since this is a state park that you won’t want to miss.

In addition to the great things to do in the park, you can use this spot for exploring the great waterfalls of State Game Lands 13 or exploring northeastern PA.

Promised Land State Park

You can get away from it all at Promised Land State Park.

Promised Land State Park can be found in the northern part of the Pocono Mountains and can be reached in less than three hours from downtown Philadelphia, making it a great weekend getaway in an RV. The park is home to 50 miles of trails (including a beautiful waterfall), two swimming beaches, boat rentals, and more.

The campground is home to nearly 400 camping spots, about half of which offer hookups for RVs, which make it especially great for those renting an RV for their trip. All of the rest of the sites are big enough for an RV, though, if you don’t mind not having hookups.

Promised Land is a great jumping-off point for exploring the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and its many miles of trails.

Located less than three hours from Philly, Codorus State Park is another great spot for an RV vacation. The park is located in southern York County and features 19 miles of trails, a popular swimming pool, boat rentals, and great fishing.

The campground in the park has nearly 200 camping spots, more than half of which include hookups for RVs.

This park is a great spot to stay if you want to visit the Gettysburg Battlefield or simply for a bit of relaxation.

Worlds End State Park

Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city at Worlds End State Park.

Worlds End State Park is another of my favorite spots to visit in all of Pennsylvania and is located just about three hours from Philadelphia. The park features only 20 miles of trails but is surrounded by Loyalsock State Forest which features many more miles of hiking trails. There is also a small swimming area in Loyalsock Creek.

This is the smallest campground on the list with only about 75 spots, about half of which can be used by an RV (some of which have electric hookups). However, this area is special enough that it’s worth planning ahead for an RV vacation here.

This campground is a great base for exploring the incredible Loyalsock State Forest, which is home to dozens of waterfalls, great vistas, and a ton of other outdoor recreation.

  1. Hickory Run State Park ,and all of northern PA woods/parks are full of black BEARS and RATTLESNAKES ,and possibly other type large snakes. I’m a hiker ,but. I don’t wish to encounter any bears ,snakes or ticks or anything else loseing a possible danger to me.

    • Ticks are really the only ones you have to worry about. Bears and snakes aren’t major safety concerns as they are more afraid of you than you are of them and will often move before you are even in the area.
